Retirement might change your lifestyle, but it certainly doesn’t mean the fun has to stop.
For Renaissance Retirement Living, IPER created Fun Doesn’t Retire — a playful cinema commercial that challenges traditional ideas of retirement living through comedy. The concept follows residents attempting to disguise just how much fun they’re having when family comes to visit. Rather than presenting retirement as a time to slow down, the campaign flips that expectation on its head, showcasing a lively community, new friendships and plenty of fun. The campaign included two different cinema advertisements, filmed over two days on location at a Renaissance Retirement Living village.
Renaissance Retirement Living wanted to showcase village life in a way that felt fresh, entertaining and different from a traditional retirement living advertisement. Fun Doesn’t Retire uses comedy to challenge the idea that retirement means slowing down. Instead, we created a story centred around residents disguising their fun-filled lifestyle when family comes to visit — showing that retirement can mean more time for community, friendship and enjoying yourself.

One of the most unique parts of the production was its cast. Rather than relying entirely on professional talent, real Renaissance residents stepped in front of the camera and became part of the story. Only two professional actors were hired, with residents taking on the remaining roles. Their involvement brought genuine personality and energy to the campaign while giving the finished commercial an authentic connection to the community it represents.

The campaign was captured across a two-day shoot on location at the village with a nimble three-person IPER crew. Working throughout the community, we brought each comedic scenario to life while directing a mix of professional actors and first-time performers. Two different cinema advertisements were produced from the campaign, including Fun Doesn’t Retire. The final film uses humour to deliver a simple message: moving into retirement living doesn’t mean giving up the things you enjoy — it might just give you more opportunities to enjoy them.
